In Madison, Wisconsin, where we live, craft beer is almost a way of life. But we're not the only ones who sing the praises of ale: for thousands of years, writers from Charles Dickens to Shakespeare have written about its seductive powers.

After searching for as many literary references to beer as we could find, we began culling them according to author, date, and quality. We wanted to a have a compelling mixture of quotations, from simple proclamations to poetic rhapsodies. For the design of the beer vessel silhouettes, we did research on glass, nickel, wooden containers, and even clay drinking cups that date back to ancient Greece. To give a hand-crafted feel, we used a paintbrush texture for the colors, and chose rich colors representative of hefewizens, stouts, red and brown ales, and lagers.
